Our virtual overseas programs can offer you global working experience and the opportunity to boost your soft and technical skills while you fast-track your studies. Explore the range of virtual internships and virtual study tours we have on offer.

Why a virtual internship or study tour?
With travel still feeling risky at the moment, it can be hard to plan your next overseas adventure. The Global Engagement team is excited to continue offering our bespoke range of virtual overseas programs, designed to give you that international experience from the safety and comfort of home!
We have two types of programs on offer: virtual internships and virtual study tours.

Global Virtual Internships – Multidiscipline
Europe, North America and Singapore | 8 weeks
3 January – 24 February 2023
Gain hands-on experience working for a company based in one of the world's leading cities.
You can choose your top three preferences from Berlin, Barcelona, Boston, LA, New York, Paris, Rome, Toronto, Singapore and more.
With internships available in many study areas and disciplines*, you'll be working on projects suited to you with access to coaching, support and a network of interns.
Cost:US$1,450 (approximately A$2,000)
Funding available:N/A
Host:The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)*Except nursing, education, aviation and biomedical engineering.

Engineering Internships
China, Hong Kong and Taiwan | 8 weeks
28 November 2022 – 20 January 2023
Use your engineering skills and gain hands-on workplace experience that will speak volumes for your CV*.
With extras such as workshops on employability skills, an assigned in-country cultural mentor and a gamified system for community interaction, this virtual internship will feel just like the real thing!
Cost:A$2,400 plus A$200 deposit**

Media & Design Internships
South Korea | 8 weeks
3 January – 24 February 2023
Expand your skills working for an international company and gain job-ready experience before you graduate.
This program is a unique opportunity for media and communications, design or business students to intern with a Korean-based organisation.
Network with other interns around the world and immerse yourself into the Korean culture.

Business & Law Internships
Malaysia | 8 weeks
3 January – 24 February 2023
Grow your CV with this virtual opportunity in Malaysia – you'll gain practical workplace experience in an outcome-driven role.
A combination of collaborating in a team and working on an independent project will give you remote learning skills to take away.
Plus extras including weekly language and culture classes and discussions that will help the experience feel like a truly global one!

IT & Business Information Systems Internships
Vietnam | 7 weeks
3–6 January 2023 (orientation)
9 January – 17 February 2023 (internship)Gain professional experience and participate in career navigation training workshops.
This program will give you tangible skills to get you job-ready for the IT and business information systems industry.
With extras such as culture exchange and expert coaching from colleagues, you'll feel like a global employee from day one.

Academic credit
Overseas internships (including our virtual programs) can be taken for academic credit towards your Swinburne degree. To learn more about this,visit our website.
Be flexible
It's important to keep an open mind with these programs. Most study areas or majors are available, but unfortunately not all, or your discipline may be better suited for a certain destination. But that's the nature of remote work-learning to be flexible! Our team will help give you program advice best suited for your course.

Specific eligibility requirementsdepend on the academic unit being utilised, but all students must meet these minimum program eligibility criteria:
Undergraduate
- Completed at least 100CP (8 units)
- Have an average weighted mark of at least 60 percent, or if your average is 50–60 percent, satisfy additional assessment criteria
- Have available space in your course for the applicable academic unit (domestic students may be able overload their degree)

- Completed at least 25CP at the time of application
- Have an average weighted mark of at least 60 percent (or satisfy additional eligibility criteria if mark is between 50-60 percent)
- Have available space in your course for the applicable academic unit (domestic students may be able overload their degree).

Please note that we only hold information sessions during the application period for each intake (Winter or Summer)
Determine which academic unit you will use
Every internship is for-credit, and every student will be enrolled in to a unit of study whilst on their internship. The unit you utilise will depend on your course, and the duration of your internship program. Check out the options on theAcademic credit from overseas internships page.
Apply online
Submit an application via ouronline application system(please note that you need to complete both pages). You need to select your desired internship program, as well as which academic unit you plan to utilise.
Receive an offer
If your application is successful, Swinburne Abroad will issue you with an offer into the internship program.
However, this does not guarantee acceptance from the internship provider or a host organisation. We will guide you along the process of applying to a provider and finding an organisation.
Yes! There is plenty of Australian Government New Colombo Plan funding available for most of these programs, which is a great way to test out a virtual experience with most (if not all) of the costs fully covered!
To meet the eligibility criteria and conditions related to this funding, you must be:
- an Australian citizen
- not a citizen of, or have residency rights to, the destination where the virtual experience is occurring
- studying an undergraduate course
- between the age of 18–28 years at the time of commencement of the program (there is a 30 percent buffer allowed for students outside of this age range)
Students who have previously received a New Colombo Plan grant for an in-person semester or short-term program are also eligible to receive up to two grants for a virtual program.

Unfortunately, OS HELP Loans are not available for virtual internships.
